A Recipe for Skin Rejuvenation

It has been reported this week that Celebrity Chef and well known icon Gordon Ramsay is the next celebrity to opt for Botox to revitalise his skin.

Ramsay had the skin rejuvenating treatment injected into his chin to smooth the dimples after a quip by close friend Simon Cowell. Ramsay said that he had always had wrinkled features, adding; "people were commenting on my chin. I was getting a complex." This feeling isn't uncommon for men or women as they grow older and with skin rejuvenation treatments available nationwide why not look your best?

What is Botox? And how does it work?

Botox has been in the media for years, with celebrities removing unwanted wrinkles, unsightly neck bands and irksome crow's feet, but many people don't actually know what it is. Jan Birch of the Blemish clinic, which specialises in skin rejuvenation treatments in Manchester says; "Botox is the trade name for botulinum toxin A. This toxin causes localised paralysis where injected by temporarily blocking signals that would normally tell your muscles to contract. This causes the skin to flex."

Wrinkles occurs where muscles contract frequently, so by paralysing facial muscles and preventing movement the area appears smoother and rejuvenated.

Botox is usually used on the upper third of the face, to tackle frown lines, forehead creases and crows' feet around the eyes. Lines around the lips and corners of the mouth are also treatable, such as Gordon's'. Untreated areas of the face aren't affected, so you can still smile and frown, but the skin on the treated areas won't wrinkle as much as usual.

What happens during the treatment?

Jan describes that as with any cosmetic treatment, you should consult a qualified practitioner before deciding to go ahead. The Botox is injected in several places with a very small needle directly into the muscles being treated. The effects are almost immediate leaving the patient fresh faced with rejuvenated skin.

Results

You'll start to see results 24-72 hours after treatment, but the main effect appears after about a week. Results last for three to four months and fade gradually. You can then have another treatment.

Pro's and Con's of skin rejuvenation treatments and Botox

Jan explains; "Your face will look smoother, younger and more relaxed. If you have repeated treatments, you may find that lines and wrinkles in those areas become less deep, and you can leave longer intervals between treatments.

There have been no severe complications or allergic responses reported by Botox users. However, you shouldn't use Botox if you are taking muscle relaxants, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a bleeding disorder or have any inflammation or infection near the spot where injections would be given. Ask your practitioner for advice if any of these are a concern."

So, where can I get Botox?

Botox injections are widely available from cosmetic surgeons as well as some skin specialists, GPs, dentists, gynaecologists, eye specialists and nurses. Beauty therapists can't give botox, as it is only available on prescription.

Jan Birch of the Blemish Clinic Manchester is qualified to perform this type of skin rejuvenation treatment along with dermal fillers for hollow eyes, lips and cheeks. Visit www.blemishclinic.co.uk for more information on skin rejuvenation treatments in Manchester, Cheshire and the North West.
